In order to facilitate exposure to a broad spectrum of technical and aesthetic approaches and perspectives, ECU composers who have been accepted as composition majors at the end of their sophomore year will begin to “rotate” their study with several of our composition faculty. Towards these ends, students are expected to explore a wide variety of musical styles, and to work on exercises designed to develop a wide variety of techniques–regardless of each student’s chosen or preferred style. ![]() Our faculty are dedicated to helping students develop their technical skills and compositional craft, with the ultimate goal of guiding students towards establishing their own artistic voice. We place emphasis on our students’ abilities to communicate effectively to their audience in professional and academic settings, both in writing and orally. Our most successful students are highly self-motivated and show initiative by taking advantage of performance opportunities and pursuing the mentoring of a variety of faculty. The ECU School of Music’s Composition program is devoted to helping students develop the skills necessary to pursue a professional and/or academic career in the composition of contemporary concert music. The String Octet is particularly significant in Mendelssohn’s career as it was one of two brilliant works considered to be a signpost of his genius in his teenage years (the other work was the ‘Overture’ to A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and it was also the first string octet to be written as a true eight-part work.Thank you for your interest in the composition program at ECU! There are many reasons to choose the ECU School of Music for your studies in composition such as our outstanding faculty, the camaraderie among composition students, having your compositions performed at Premiere Performances concerts, and participation in the North Carolina NewMusic Initiative events and commissioning project. Mendelssohn’s String Octet was written in 1825, when the composer was only 16 years old, and marks a transition between Classical style and the age of Romanticism. The best Mendelssohn works include his ‘Overture’ and incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, The Hebrides Overture, Songs Without Words, and his Violin Concerto. Mendelssohn wrote symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His ten visits to Britain, during which many of his major works were premiered, form an important part of his adult career. Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany and was well-received in his travels throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. In his music, Mendelssohn largely observed Classical models and practices while initiating key aspects of Romanticism. ![]() He is often considered the greatest child prodigy after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Robert Schumann, a close friend, perceptively described him as, “the Mozart of the 19th century”. Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period.
